Michael Vivo

(b. Dec. 6, 1947 - d. Jan. 12, 1984)
Michael Vivo was a master draughtsman, whose career was on a highly successful trajectory when his life was cut short by illness at the age of 36.  A graduate of The Cooper Union, Vivo began his post-baccalaureate years as a painter.
A period of experimentation followed, during which he painted, made collages, sketched constantly and explored a variety of media, often combining several into one finished work.  He experimented with realism as well as with distortion; he manipulated the physicality of paint and pastel and examined the possibilities of “line” and the texture of pencil.  Ultimately, the pencil became his medium of choice. His mature work illustrates the heights to which such a simple medium can transport the viewer.
